Before You Begin
Simple Practices for Writing with Ease and Joy
We’re taught to set goals, hit our word counts, and follow rules, but striving and checking boxes is draining and demoralizing, and eventually, our work reflects that. The creative process is messy, especially when we’re doing it right. We are artists. We create something out of nothing. We make meaning. We celebrate being human. So why not develop a writing process that feels deeply, luxuriously, beautifully human?
In this four-week course, I’ll guide you through the creative process I use to embrace the mysterious nature of writing. These gentle practices have brought me comfort even when I feel stuck, don’t know what to write next, or just want to create something that feels true and deep, but I’m not sure where to begin.
Whether you’re drafting a picture book, staring at a blank page wondering how to turn it into a novel, or taking walks with characters for a chapter book that might really be middle grade in disguise, it’s time to let yourself dream, explore, play, break the rules, and fall in love with writing.
I’ll help you:
Feel clear and confident about your project
Get excited to start writing
Understand your creativity more deeply
Develop practices and touchstones you can turn to throughout the writing process
This is for you if:
You’re longing to write a book, but you don’t know where to start.
You’ve started a manuscript, and now you feel stuck.
You’re an experienced writer, but you want your next project to feel different.
You want to enjoy the writing process and feel more creative.
What’s It Like?
A sparkling permission slip from the universe
A writing retreat at home
Conversations with your writing bestie
A yoga teacher holding space for you to stretch, explore, and grow
Lessons and thought experiments
An optional Skype call with Heidi for accountability, brainstorming, and strategizing
How Does It Work?
When you sign up, you’ll receive eight emails over the next four weeks. The process is meant to be a tiny bit luxurious and help you sink into your most creative state, so treat each message as an invitation to take a mini writing retreat. The quieter and more contemplative you can get during this stage, the more space there will be for your innate creativity to shine. You’ll be able to hear your intuition, and eventually, when it’s time to put words on the page, you’ll know what to do, and the writing process will be easier.
If you’re the kind of person who needs accountability, you can schedule the optional Skype consult with me, so you’ll have something to look forward to after the lessons are done. We can use the time to analyze your writing process, brainstorm ideas for your story, strategize next steps, talk about how to navigate the weird world of publishing, or just chat about books. (Or if you’re an introvert who would rather never be on Skype or just don’t need that extra pressure, that’s ok too!)
